The publicity blurb states it is "a documentary and recording journey inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it lived throughout the early 20th century. Our project brings the sprit of his work into the present as we pair breakthrough musicians with the songs and the fascinating recording technology of the past. With just one microphone, one authentic 1930′s PRESTO direct-to-disc recorder, and one blank lacquer disk, musicians are given the opportunity to make a recording anywhere they choose. What we have found is that the film, music and feelings that result defy space and time, living music inspired by ghosts."

It's also recorded on a digital camera, as you can see here in a session by Reverend John DeLore & Kara Suzanne at the High Horse Saloon & Salon, Williamsburg, September 2011.

The commentary is a bit naff, but this film, captured around the Caribbean island of Bonaire has breathtaking imagery and spacious stereo recordings. The principal aim was to record the sounds of the ubiquitous snapping shrimp.

Sounds were captured in surround sound on the sea bed, some of them at night in pitch darkness. What looks like a Sound Devices 788 eight-track solid state recorder, in a waterproof housing that can withstand pressure up to 100 metres depth on a rig of 4 hydrophones, was taken by scuba divers to the sea bed. This truly takes field recording to new depths (sorry!).

The recording rig and other expedition details are described here.
If you have the right audio playback set up, watch it in surround sound by downloading the movie here.
